Sui Mainnet Faces Major Network Stall on May 28

On May 28, the Sui suffered another major outage on the network after the network paused for almost six hours due to technical issues.

Due to a technical issue, the network halted transactions for around six hours after it stopped producing the new blocks on the network. As per the latest update shared by the official X handle, the network has restored the services back to normal after fixing a bug.

According to the official post on X, this outage on the network happened due to “a crash bug in the gas charging logic introduced by the 1.72 release.” However, the team is still investigating the matter.

SUI Network Faces Another Major Network Issue in 2026

This was the second major disruption on the SUI network in 2026. The first outage took place earlier this year in January, which lasted for more than 6 hours. This second outage on the network lasted for around six hours.

According to some reports circulating on social media, users started facing an outage on the network and the blockchain explorers stopped displaying new blocks. This situation created panic amongst the SUI community members.

At present, decentralized applications and other services on the network, including blockchain explorers like SuiScan, are also facing slow performance. Some of these protocols have temporarily halted their operations on the network.

Sui is a Layer 1 blockchain that was developed by Mysten Labs by using a programming language known as Move. This blockchain is developed to execute a large number of transactions at once by using a parallel execution technique. For this, it also uses an object-based data model.

However, there are many blockchains like Solana that have faced congestion-related issues. Sui has also faced many problems related to how its validators reach agreement or how transactions are scheduled.

At the time of writing this, SUI is trading at around $0.929 after dropping around 5% on a daily chart with a market capitalization of around $3.72 billion, according to CoinMarketCap.

Outages on Blockchains Damage Users’ Trust in DeFi

Blockchain outages are one of the major problems for the on-chain ecosystem. However, Sui is developed in a way that it will stop producing new blocks instead of errors that create risk for users’ funds.

However, two incidents in the last 5 months are raising questions about its development.

In the past, Solana and other blockchain networks have also faced major outages. These kinds of technical issues on the network have temporarily raised questions about its scalability.

For example, in 2021, Solana faced its biggest outage on the network, which lasted for approximately 17 hours. However, this happened due to bot spamming on the network at the time of launching tokens. This spamming created an overflow in the memory. In 2022, once again, Solana faced another major outage on the network following NFT spamming by the Candy Machine NFT collection.

These kinds of outages are also witnessed in other networks like Avalanche, Aptos, Polygon, Ethereum, Bitcoin, and others.

Amid the bearish sentiment in the crypto market, these kinds of incidents are damaging the trust of users in the DeFi ecosystem. Apart from this, major hacks, like Kelp DAO and Drift Protocol, in the last few months have already pushed many investors away from the DeFi sector. It is important for developers to work on this and fix these issues before it is too late.
