Yuga Labs, the developer of the famous NFT projects Bored Ape Yacht Club and Mutant Ape Yacht Club, last week announced that the Super Punk World NFT airdrop will happen on May 30. The creators opted to proceed with it despite the negative repercussions they received from the public during its planned launch.
On May 28, in a detailed blog post, Yuga Labs reaffirmed its desire to proceed with this project, which represents a step forward in the combination of postmodern NFT art and classicism. The launch collaboration is with Nina Chanel Abney, a well-known digital artist who has worked with Pharrell Williams’ Gallery of Digital Assets (GODA) and provided animations for South Park.
Abney’s Super Cool World is a compilation of styles that come together within a complete edition of 5,080 NFTs to encapsulate her unique approach to art’s composite aesthetic.
The first suggestion to start the drops last week stirred controversy, particularly about the art piece’s content. In addition, after evaluating the reception of the art in the domain, members of the crypto and NFT community on X (Twitter) complained that the art raises the topic of race and gender and was too “woke.” Therefore, Yuga Labs had to stop the project for a while to analyze the reactions and potential consequences for their brand.
Although Yuga Labs and Nina Chanel faced a challenging start, they chose to proceed with the airdrop, integrating famous Punk characteristics with Art Abney’s techniques. The NFT airdrop of Super Punk World will only happen at the end of May, and it will be limited to only the Super Cool World collections. To attract their community to their project, Yuga Labs has opted to distribute the new airdrops by randomly selecting 500 wallets holding at least one SCW NFT through provably random selection. This serves the purpose of expressing appreciation to current supporters and, at the same time, emphasizing the significance and relevance of owning an NFT in the Yuga Labs ecosystem.
