- AI and blockchain-powered Opensci platform aims to reward scientists.
- The platform seeks to reduce publication costs and introduce new funding tools.
- Experts say the platform could transform how scientific research is shared and protected.
Scientists have reportedly launched a new platform called Opensci that combines AI and blockchain technologies. The platform helps researchers to track their work and get a share of the financial rewards from their discoveries.
As per reports, Opensci lets scientist record and monitor their research digitally, making it easier for them to get recognition and funding across different fields. The platform also aims to tackle the high costs of publishing and the gaps in research funding.
How Opensci Empowers Researchers
According to the latest reports, the AI and blockchain spaces are once again making surprises with their joint venture. A group of scientists has launched Opensci, a platform that combines both blockchain and AI technologies.
On Tuesday, the platform was officially unveiled during a joint session of the World Laureates Summit and the World Governments Summit. At the event, Prof Roger Kornberg, the Chairman of the World Laureates Association, stated that the project will use AI to support scientists and help drive progress by putting greater focus back on breakthroughs in basic scientific research. The professor stated,
“Major technology companies [are] pursuing the development of AI. What we wish to do is make the best use of those tools … and make them available in the most convenient way to achieve the purposes of practicing scientists.”
Reportedly, the platform is developed to help researchers from different fields share in the financial rewards of their work. Opensci also allows scientists record and track their research digitally, using blockchain to make the process secure and transparent.
Interestingly, the system is designed to address the high costs of publishing research and the gaps in funding that many scientists face. It uses a special type of AI built specifically for science, helping to manage, organize, and monitor research projects more efficiently. It also ensures that researchers get proper recognition and support for their efforts.
Why This is Important?
According to Prof. Kornberg, Opensci is significant in today’s research space. Sharing his concerns about the present condition of scientific research today, the professor noted Opensci is a necessity.
The scientist added that the kind of pioneering work he did in the 1970s would likely struggle to get published now because many scientific journals are run by people who are not active scientists. This, he believes, limits how new and important scientific ideas are shared.
Further, he added that truly original discoveries often challenge existing beliefs, which makes them more likely to be rejected by journals. He stated that some of his most important research would probably never be published in today’s system. He noted that in the past, journals were led by respected scientists who understood the value of bold ideas, but he feels that this is no longer the case.
In his view, Opensci could help solve this issue by offering an alternative to traditional journals. It would allow scientists to share their work directly with the research community and announce discoveries while using blockchain to protect the authenticity and ownership of their data.
